Wow it’s been a long and painful process – trying to find a natural deodorant that actually works.
And by ‘works’ I don’t mean keeps me totally dry, because I now get that our bodies actually need to perspire – it’s a normal part of life.
By ‘works’ I mean – doesn’t leave me stinky. And not too wet. (hello vanity)
The thing is, I’m a pretty sweaty person. Not fun to say, but I am. It’s something I have tried to hide for a long time and as a teenager I went to some extreme lengths to stop the wetness.
These days I’m feeling a little more conscious of the things I’m putting in and on my body. Everything has an effect. There are question marks around using aluminium (the key ingredient that stops you sweating) in deodorant. I mean, it’s right near some pretty important things, and it is absorbed by our body.
And you know what – when you use the old ‘commonsense’ approach – does adding a mineral like aluminium directly onto our skin to stop a natural bodily process make sense? We sweat for a reason right? We expel toxins and manage body temperature through the sweat glands. That’s serious work!
So – let’s clean up our armpits!
First the two that haven’t worked for me…
Weleda Wild Rose Deodorant review- $27.95
Expensive trial! I think this product is designed for someone who wants to smell like roses and doesn’t sweat. I had no luck with this deodorant. The smell was kind of like your grandma – and it definitely didn’t last all day. Shame, because I have a lot of great Weleda products that are SO effective. I really like this brand, but it’s a no no for the deodorant.
Miessence Aroma Free Deodorant review – $11.50
This was the second Miessence deodorant product I have tried because I keep hearing such good things. And it’s obviously a cheaper option – so I WANTED it to work. I’ve also tried the Tahitian Breeze and it was slightly better, but not great. They obviously work for quite a few people because I hear good reports, but for me, no luck. I just found myself pretty stinky by the afternoon.
And here is our winner!
Black Chicken Axilla Deodorant Paste review – $15.95
I kept hearing about this brand and this product in particular. I thought it would be so strange to apply deodorant with your fingers (it’s a thick paste consistency). But I got over that pretty quick for a few reasons.
I don’t smell!! A natural deodorant that doesn’t leave me stinky – winning.
It lasts for freaking AGES! I have been going with one jar for well over a month and I’m probably half way through the pot.
I’m not sure if this is a benefit of this particualr product, but a side effect of trying out these natural deodorants is that my body usually recognises that the hard core stuff isn’t being used and I get a rash and even pimples (gross – sorry – TMI?). And you need to give yourself some time for everything to balance out. I did not have the same reaction with this paste. Woop!
It’s also an Australia product so awesome to support them
Now, you’ll see that I link the products to a website called Nourished Life. It is now the only place that I buy hair care, body care, makeup – deodorant! Irene is so thorough in her investigations of brands that she supports and I just love that someone else has done the hard work for me. I’m bringing you a feature with Irene soon – love her work.
I’d love to know if you have a natural deodorant that ‘works’ or perhaps you don’t wear any!? I do hope this review helps.
PS. This post contains affiliate links. I support the work of Irene at Nourished Life. She has done lots of the homework for us! I have been buying most of my natural products from her.
