I was just writing to the gorgeous Tracy at Shut Up and Relax Yoga, explaining how much I was loving this new house and I said “the island bench has changed my life”.
Because it HAS!
I’ve always had small poky kitchens and thought I enjoyed the ‘cosy’-ness. But seriously, who was I kidding!? In my opinion now, bigger is better with kitchens. Or it is for me, because I’m not a ‘clean as you go’ type of gal.
So we have an island bench and though we don’t have cool stools to sit at yet, the kids are up on normal chairs at pretty much every meal of the day. They are involved way more in the cooking. And I can be tidying up as I feed them.
It’s communal, it’s comforting.
My son is now really actively involved with the cooking – if he so much as senses I’m getting the peeler out he’s there! They can see the food being prepared, they can participate. I don’t have to sit them on the bench anylonger. Wow – I have LOTS of these photos!!
I’m looking forward to all the conversations around our new bench. I’m looking forward to educating the kids more about food and what’s going in their meals.
I’m NOT looking forward to the tantrums and spilt food and drink, but hey, that just comes with the territory!
Instead of feeling excluded while I’m the kitchen or (worse!) with kids under my feet, they now have somewhere to sit and can help me do things, even if getting some potatoes peeled and into the oven now takes half an hour…! I know this all seems so trivial, and why would I write a blog post on it!? I guess it’s because I’ve wanted this for such a long time and even though this house is only a rental.
I feel like I’ve finally got a kitchen I can enjoy. And that matters!
So high five to island benches! It certainly has changed my life for the better.
(Must do something about the corners though – because a friend’s son smashed his head on it yesterday and it wasn’t pretty…)
Do you have one? Do you love it?
